The Snow

We just got our first snow up here in the high desert of New Mexico. It was very pretty, big fluffy flakes, blown against the side of buildings and mesas , and sitting softly on all the branches of the evergreens. So picturesque. It's getting colder by the day and the sun falls below the horizon sooner and sooner each day. Exactly the weather for hot tea, big soft quilts, and stacks of good books.

Someone needs to write this song for me. It's been running around my head for a week now, but I ain't got the skilz to do it justice. (Sounds like a good premise for a SPG song...)

"Those who don't try..."

The other day, we ran down to the dollar store to check for pup collars. As we got out of the car, there was a large explosion of change behind the car. Now, normally, I wouldn't take the time when we were in a rush, but one particular coin caught my eye. It had the look of a peso or some such. Since I collect coins, and the events of half magic jumping to the fore of my thoughts, I reached down and snatched it on my way past. I stuck it in my pocket, and went on my way. When I did think to pull it out and look at it, much to my surprise, it was...

Late Last Night...

Big Toe Truck
Words and Music By: Joe & Linda Scruggs

A big toe truck came to town
to pull some people toes around,
with a nick nack paddy wack, I would like to know,
how it feels when a truck is pulling your toe.

A yellow fork lift came to town
to move some knives and forks around
with a nick nack paddy wack,
wouldn't it be neat
if I had a fork lift to help me eat?

A pickup truck came to town
to pick up trash off of the graound
with a nick nack paddy wack
a dust pan and a broom
a pickup truck could clean my room.

Wiggle In My Toe
Words and Music By: Joe & Linda Scruggs

There's a wiggle in my toe,
Teacher don't you know,
I'd love to stop the wiggle
'Cause it makes me want to giggle.
I've done everything I can,
And I wanted you to know,
I just can't stop
The wiggle in my toe.

Now there's a wiggle in my feet,
And I think I should repeat
That I'd love to stop the wiggle
'Cause it makes me want to giggle.
I've done everything I can,
And I know that it's not neat.
I just can't stop
The wiggle in my feet,
And in my toe.
OH, NO!

Now there's a wiggle in my seat,
And just like my feet
I'd love to stop the wiggle
'Cause it makes me want to giggle.
I've done everything I can,
And I know that it's not neat,
I just can't stop
The wiggle in my seat,
And in my feet,
And in my toe.
OH, NO!

Now there's a wiggle in my knee,
And it sure bothers me.
I'd love to stop the wiggle
'Cause it makes me want to giggle.
I've done everything I can,
And I hope that you see
I just can't stop
The wiggle in my knee,
And in my seat,
And in my feet,
And in my toe.
OH, NO!

Now there's a wiggle in my tummy,
And it's not very funny.
I'd love to stop the wiggle
'Cause it makes me want to giggle.
I've done everything I can,
I even tried a little honey.
I just can't stop
The wiggle in my tummy,
And in my knee,
And in my seat,
And in my feet,
And in my toe.
OH, NO!

Now there's a wiggle in my arm,
And it's doing me no harm.
I'd love to stop the wiggle
'Cause it makes me want to giggle.
I've done everything I can,
And I hope you're not alarmed.
I just can't stop
The wiggle in my arm,
And in my tummy,
And in my knee,
And in my seat,
And in my feet,
And in my toe.
OH, NO!

Now there's a wiggle in my hand,
And it's nothing that I planned.
I'd love to stop the wiggle
'Cause it makes me want to giggle.
I've done everything I can,
And I hope you understand.
I just can't stop
The wiggle in my hand,
And in my arm,
And in my tummy,
And in my knee,
And in my seat,
And in my feet,
And in my toe.
OH, NO!

Now there's a wiggle in my head,
And it's something that I dread.
I'd love to stop the wiggle
'Cause it makes me want to giggle.
I've done everything I can,
I even tried a nap in bed.
I just can't stop
The wiggle in my head,
And in my hand,
And in my arm,
And in my tummy,
And in my knee,
And in my seat,
And in my feet,
And in my toe.
OH, NO!

Now there's a wiggle in my hair
And I think that I'll stop there...

This is just a sampling of the music and amazing abilities of Joe Scruggs. As a child we would listen to the tape we had over and over and over.
I recently went looking for them to see if I could figure out if the music was still around. I found ALL of his music is available on CD. YAY!

My very good and wonderful friend bought me the CD "Late last night" for my birthday.

Tra la la, tweedle dee dee...

When the sun in the morning peeps over the hill,
And kisses the roses 'round my window sill,
Then my heart fills with gladness when I hear the trill
Of the birds in the treetops on Mockin' Bird Hill.

Tra la la, tweedle dee dee
It gives me a thrill,
To wake up in the morning
To the mockin' bird's trill.
Tra la la tweedle dee dee
There's peace and good will;
You're welcome as the flowers
On Mockin' Bird Hill

Got a three-cornered plow and an acre to till
And a mule that I bought for a ten-dollar bill
There's a tumble-down shack and a rusty ol' mill
But it's my Home Sweet Home up on Mockin' Bird Hill.

Tra la la, tweedle dee dee
It gives me a thrill,
To wake up in the morning
To the mockin' bird's trill.
Tra la la tweedle dee dee
There's peace and good will;
You're welcome as the flowers
On Mockin' Bird Hill

When it's late in the evening I climb up the hill
And survey all my kingdom while everything's still.
Only me and the sky and an ol' whippoorwill
Singin' songs in the twilight on Mockin' Bird Hill.

Tra la la, tweedle dee dee
It gives me a thrill,
To wake up in the morning
To the mockin' bird's trill.
Tra la la tweedle dee dee
There's peace and good will;
You're welcome as the flowers

You don't bring me flowers....

As most people know, I am not so into the whole bouquet craze, but a friend asked me to take some photos of her gift. So friend, here they are. Well...some of them. If you want more let me know.

Just a random one...
I like the close up, you can see all the spots of moisture and the tiny veins on the petals.
Probably one of my favorites of this session. I'm really attached to the composition of this one.

A passable one of all three. Could have been better, but the focus is interesting.

~~~~~~
And, for those of you who don't know it, the lyrics of the song this post is titled after...
(Well, some of them.)
♫♪♫♪♫♪♫
Neil Diamond (Duet with Barbra Streisand)
Written by: Neil Diamond, Alan Bergman and Marilyn Bergman
It used to be so natural
To talk about forever
But "used to be's" don't count anymore
They just lay on the floor
'Til we sweep them away
And baby, I remember
All the things you taught me
I learned how to laugh
And I learned how to cry
Well I learned how to love
even learned how to lie
So you'd think I could learn
How to tell you goodbye
You don't bring me flowers anymore
Well you'd think I could learn
how to tell you 'goodbye'
You don't say you need me
You don't sing me love songs
You don't bring me flowers anymore...
♫♪♫♪♫♪♫
Wow, it's kinda a depressing song, isn't it?
I always sing it "You don't bring me flowers, ever at all". (And usually at the top of my lungs...)
Spring, the "theme of my lays"....
Flow gently, sweet Afton, among thy green braes,
Flow gently, I'll sing thee a song in thy praise;
My Mary's asleep by thy murmuring stream,
Flow gently, sweet Afton, disturb not her dream.
Thou stock dove whose echo resounds thro' the glen,
Ye wild whistling blackbirds in yon thorny den,
Thou green-crested lapwing, thy screaming forbear,
I charge you disturb not my slumbering Fair.
How lofty, sweet Afton, thy neighbouring hills,
Far marked with the courses of clear, winding rills;
There daily I wander as noon rises high,
My flocks and my Mary's sweet cot in my eye.
How pleasant thy banks and green valleys below,
Where, wild in the woodlands, the primroses blow;
There oft, as mild ev'ning weeps over the lea,
The sweet-scented birk shades my Mary and me.
Thy crystal stream, Afton, how lovely it glides,
And winds by the cot where my Mary resides;
How wanton thy waters her snowy feet lave,
As, gathering sweet flowerets, she stems thy clear wave.
Flow gently, sweet Afton, among thy green braes,
Flow gently, sweet River, the theme of my lays;
My Mary's asleep by thy murmuring stream,
Flow gently, sweet Afton, disturb not her dream.
Awake...keep me awake....
"Awake"
A beautiful and blinding morning
The world outside begins to breathe
See clouds arriving without warning
I need you here to shelter me
And I know that only time will tell us how
To carry on without each other
So keep me awake to memorize you
Give me more time to feel this way
We can't stay like this forever
But I can have you next to me today
If I could make these moments endless
If I could stop the winds of change
If we just keep our eyes wide open
Then everything would stay the same
And I know that only time will tell me how
We'll carry on without each other
So keep me awake for every moment
Give us more time to be this way
We can't stay like this forever
But I can have you next to me today
We'll let tomorrow wait, you're here, right now, with me
All my fears just fall away, when you are all I see
We can't stay like this forever
But I have you here today
And I will remember
Oh I will remember
Remember all the love we shared today
We will abandon it a All
We will abandon it all for the sake of the call
No other reason at all but the sake of the call
Wholly devoted to live and to die for the sake of the call
Nobody stood and applauded them
So they knew from the start
This road would not lead to fame
All they really knew for sure
Was Jesus had called to them
He said "come follow Me" and they came
With reckless abandon, they came
Empty nets lying there at the water's edge
Told a story that few could believe
And none could explain
How some crazy fisherman agreed to go where Jesus went
With no thought to what they would gain
For Jesus had called them by name
And they answered...
We will abandon it all for the sake of the call
No other reason at all but the sake of the call
Wholly devoted to live and to die for the sake of the call
The sake of the call
Drawn like the rivers are drawn to the sea
There's no turning back, for the water cannot help but flow
Once we hear the Savior's call, we'll follow wherever He leads
Because of the love He has shown
And because He has called us to go
We will answer...
We will abandon it all for the sake of the call
No other reason at all but the sake of the call
Wholly devoted to live and to die
Not for the sake of a creed or a cause
Not for a dream or a promise
Simply because it is Jesus who called
It's beginning to....
There are soggy, dead worms all over campus....~~~
OK, first of all, it's just rain. Not even acid rain, 'cause although that happens, it certainly isn't happening now. The drops aren't going to burn tiny holes in your body, or eat your skin off.
And second, do you really think putting your hand, or book, or paper or whatever other ineffectual item, up there is going to make a lick of difference in how wet you get?
You might as well just accept with dignity and grace the fact that nature has no discrimination whatsoever. And if you really think that by hunching your shoulders, or running you are somehow going to escape it's notice, you are delusional.
If you don't like rain, get an umbrella or stay indoors. Otherwise, you should know I will feel free to mock you.
~~~

I like rain. I always have. I don't remember if I was a water baby or not, but I do know I am a fish wannabe. If there is water...I like it. Rivers-n-lakes, Ponds-n-puddles, rain-n-snow, oceans-n-seas, baths-n-showers, fogs-n-mists, sprinklers-n-hoses, spring or soda. Water in general and every form. I think I am part mermaid.

Except I wear more clothes then they do...

March comes in like a lion.....

"The storm, which rolled in Friday, dumped 20.4 inches of snow on Columbus, breaking the city's previous record of 15.3 inches set in February 1910, the weather service said. Cincinnati and Cleveland also received about a foot of snow."

Check it out...
I've never really thought clearly (or to much extent) about it, but being here in the land of Perpetual Precipitation serves to increase the time spent on thinking of rain/snow/weather, so light should have dawned by now. Well, I had an epiphany in class this morning. Dr.B Sr was talking about the passage in Psalms where it says, "purge me with hyssop and cleanse me whiter then snow." and the premise is that snow is rain and rain is moisture wrapped around a dust particle of some time, and therefore snow is not completely white, but has a core of grime as it's basis...David was speaking not of salvation but of spiritual cleansing of the core of self-centered-ness in himself. Cool imagery, but not my epiphany. It just hit me like a flash that one of the reasons it rains (snows, etc.) a lot up here is the higher level of molecules in the air. Denser air, more pollution, etc. Now, L1 is the physicist in the family, but every now and then I tend to enjoy it as well. Just as long as he or some other smarter person isn't around to correct my misconceptions and errors. Please, no comments.

For My Mother...

Yes, I know, she is mad at us for going without her, but I am a good daughter, so I will show her the pictures any way.

~~~~~~
The Booth Brothers:
Ronnie
Michael
Scott?
Yes, he is relatively new. The older fellow was their father but had to stop traveling with them a while back due to ill health.
We found they were going to be close by so I bullied various people into 1. Loaning me their car, (Thank you ma'am!) and 2. Driving us up there. (Yay my brother!) The concert was great, the pastor of the Baptist Temple was scary and odd, (Sorry, I just am not interested in seeing a squat, fifty-ish, hairy dude dancing across the stage. Not something that made it onto the list of things to do before I die.), their music has improved even in the last few years since I have renewed my listening, and the hilarity of the strange and unusual people that went with or met us there was unsettling.
~~~~~~

I really like this one. Love the way it turned out that you can see both of them in a row.

Then three in a row.Then two in a row again.

~~~~~~
High Points of the Evening:
  1. Michael's solo. Can't deny the unique beauty of a tenor solo.
  2. T2 and M.P. head banging to a simi-upbeat southern gospel song.
  3. Ronnie Booth missing his cue and completely cracking up after seeing T2 and his cronies head banging. Then saying, "Yeah, there ya go!" in response.
  4. Ronnie Booth saying "Sure you can get a picture to send to your mom," and "Where's she at?" and "We wish she had been able to come when we were in Yukon," and various other nice things to her through me. (Are you taking notes, Motn?)
  5. Them offering a picture with Tony after I had opted out of one with me.
  6. T2 all manfully going up to shake their hands and get the pic, but saying something like "Good job, I like your music, been listening to it since I was a kid." Ronnie responding with "Since you were a kid? Makes me feel old!" Which caused all of them to bust out laughing, which made for a perfect candid shot.
    Then Michael turned to T2 and said "How old are you anyway?" just as I snapped this one. They were all cracked up.
It was a very, very good night. T2 and I both needed it. We hadn't had a just us time in a while.
(Even though it made my Mommy mad at me for a while. ♥I wuv you anyways!♥)
