Above the clouds.
Left Albuquerque International Sunport at 10:45 or so. This post was actually written from the air. That's right, feel privileged.
~~~
The Young Squire was asleep before the wheels even left the ground. Now for a nice two hour nap to Houston.
~~~
I am still quite a child when it comes to flying. Just the sheer fact of it makes me grin irrepressibly. All that magic holding this box up in the air is really overwhelming.
~~~
The drinks service is a lovely touch, since I am a peckish traveller. A nice icy cold Coca-Cola goes a long way in my book. (There's a nice insight if you ever need to get on my good side...)
~~~
There is a couple sitting just ahead of us. They are... Very... comfortable... with each other... I'm thinking they should have booked a private cabin. :)
~~~
It's quite a blustery day out there. A bit of turbulence too. And of course we are going from 30 in Cuba to 70 in Houston. Yes, I will be completely annoyed with this coat/hat/scarf/gloves/boots thing by the time we get on the next flight.
No, I was not even remotely willing to brave the chill of NM merely for the convenience of less stuff. At least I know it'll be cold in Germany...
~~~
We were just told by the flight attendant that the young one "would probably be famous, rich and have lots of girl friends".
I think this hypothesis was based solely on his name. Interesting...
~~~
You know, sitting in the last row before the head, you kind of notice the absurd amount of travel to and from. It's absurd, I promise.
~~~
Okay, lots of turbulence coming down...
Lots and lots.
Further updates as events warrant. (Or if I get bored.)

Here we go...
So, my last post from the states for a while. Hopefully I'll get lots of adventuresome updates with awesome pictures attached.
Or I might end up posting a hundred and fifty once I get back from the void...
We'll see...

Sock Monkey Likes Buttons...
Today the Young Squire spent a long time repeatedly pressing a button on one of his toys, then taking his sock monkey's "hand" and helping it press the same button, before moving on to the next one. It was very, very awesome. I love watching him discover and experiment with the world around him. He is such a very smart and observant kid.

Propitiation
"Propitiation means the turning away of wrath by an offering. In relation to soteriology, propitiation means placating or satisfying the wrath of God by the atoning sacrifice of Christ."
Charles C. Ryrie (1999-01-11). Basic Theology: A Popular Systematic Guide to Understanding Biblical Truth
"The word propitiation carries the basic idea of appeasement, or satisfaction, specifically towards God. Propitiation is a two-part act that involves appeasing the wrath of an offended person and being reconciled to them." Propitiation is that "by which it becomes consistent with his character and government to pardon and bless the sinner. The propitiation does not procure his love or make him loving; it only renders it consistent for him to exercise his love towards sinners."
A two part act.
"Appeasing the wrath of an offended person" - through acceptance of Christ's sacrifice, thereby covering our sin with His shed blood. "Being reconciled" - through a conscious choice to change our lifestyle, our choices, our reactions, our attitudes, on a daily basis, to bring them back into line with the biblical model of being.
Propitiation is a lifestyle choice, not a wall between you and your sins.
(Sermon is now over. You may go in peace.)

Anne Actors
When watching Anne of Green Gables the movie, The part that bothers me the most, more than inaccuracies in storyline or the fact that they took license with characters, is that when they made the character of Matthew and then had to get a body double for the actor when he was sick, it doesn't look at all like him when you see him from different angles. Let me tell ya, it just gets on my last nerve. Completely detracts from the enjoyment of one of my all time favorite stories.

Sticky Stitches
I made this today.
It really didn't take that long, but now I need someone who sews to finish it up for me. As it is now it is quite uncomfortable to wear. More like a combo robe & acupuncture set. All around I am quite pleased with it, though. Now if only I had a friend (hint), or a mother (hint), or a sister (hint), who had a sewing machine. (Hint, Hint)

The Snow
We just got our first snow up here in the high desert of New Mexico. It was very pretty, big fluffy flakes, blown against the side of buildings and mesas , and sitting softly on all the branches of the evergreens. So picturesque. It's getting colder by the day and the sun falls below the horizon sooner and sooner each day. Exactly the weather for hot tea, big soft quilts, and stacks of good books.

Just a test...
I need to figure out if this app will save my posts between when we have wifi so I can keep updated all through Europe. (Ah, That has a nice ring to it.)
Anne
Edited later; Well, I wrote, then it "failed to save due to connection error" (its on airplane mode), then closed out the app and reopened it and the post is still here. Guess that is safe enough. It just says "Retry upload" on it to let me know it isn't backed up online. And since we will have wifi for sure on the trains even if only patchy everywhere else, I am fairly comfortable with this plan.

Here and Around
Bits from my life:
"Well, if you don't want bad in-laws, just take care you marry an orphan..."<- A bit of advice given me.
"God gave me a voice, so that you could stop talking and listen to what I have to say."<- At the dinner table.
"Nononono! No, son, that's horse poo!" <- Drifting in my window. Most awesome thing ever overheard.
~~~~
Anne: Fred is... extremely good.
Marilla: That is exactly what he should be! Would you want to marry a wicked man?
Anne: Well, I wouldn't marry anyone who was really wicked, but I think I'd like it if he could be wicked and wouldn't.
Marilla: You'll have better sense some day, I hope.
Opinions and Activities
I think he should sleep on his bed. The Young Squire thinks he should bounce on it. The battle of wills has begun...
Also, when he hears me coming and pops his little head up out of his crib, he look remarkably like a meerkat giving alert...
~~~~~
How my day usually goes:
7:15 - I arise with a smile & a song and emerge from my room ready to take on the day with joy. (Crawl messily out of my bed, and throw on a robe.)
7:30 - The boss dances out the door towards the amazing gift that are public school kids. (L leaves for work.)
8:00 to 8:30 - Young Squire is done eating. I commence to remove the banana from his hair, the milk from his neck and the toast from his ear. (Hopefully, "We" will get the hang of this spoon thing eventually.)
8:30 to 10:30 - Time for "amuse yourself with your toys cause I refuse to allow your imagination to wither and die if I can help it" playtime. This is most often in his packNplay. This is Auntie Anne's sit near and read time. (Interesting note: the mini human has developed an interesting habit. For as long as I will stand/kneel there and as long as my arms are around him, he will stand and lean against me and the side of the crib/playpen, lay his head on my shoulder, completely content. Occasionally, he will put his hand on my arm and just pat it for a while. He doesn't want to be held, picked up, removed from the area, or any such, at least not that I can tell by experimentation. I would swear he is starved for affection, if I weren't here all day to see how often this tough old bird turns into a great big softy. No, really, my arms and lips are exhausted. Anyway, random, but it is quite endearing.)
10:30 - By this time, the young'un has begun to wind down (or get cranky) and usually goes down for his nap. This is Auntie Anne's 'get presentable" time and then when I make my Breakfast/Lunch/Brunch, depending on what I feel like eating.
12:00 - Usually up and around by this time. Him, not me. Supervised play and run around with Auntie Anne trailing behind. Books, puzzles, building blocks, etc. (On the rare day that he over sleeps this mark, we just continue the schedule a bit later.)
12:00 to 1:00 - His lunch time varies depending on his level of "feed me now or I will attempt to break the sound barrier while completely still." He isn't grouchy about it, just loud. (Never knew someone who could make that sound and still smile angelically at the same time.)
1:00 - Another general decontamination to remove the masticated nutrition from... everywhere.
1:15 to 2:00 - More run around time, outside time and animal visiting. (Getting a bit nippy out for this one. At least the sun still warms it up. But we usually have coats on anyway.)
2:00 to 3:00 - Wind down time from the excitement of the great outdoors. PackNplay with toys, usually with music of some kind, or occasionally a video. (Yes, I can now quote The Prince of Egypt verbatim. That and Fantasia2000 are his favorites.)
3:00 - Usually ready for his afternoon nap by this time. Although, lately he has been spending most of his nights up and screaming, so we are going to try tapering back on the afternoon sleeping. Hopefully, everyone will be better for it.
4:00ish - Mom comes home and takes over the youngun while Auntie Anne fades out of the picture. My evenings are always spent on something, I just can't seem to think of anything profitable that comes from my evenings. No, Wait, I am getting much more comfortable with my guitar, if not really more skilled. And the books/movies/shows quota of my life is more than being met. :)

I am St. George!
Today, we celebrated Labor Day by... Wait for it... Laboring. Three-ish hours of weed-whacking. (Or weed-eating? That's what we always called it, but now it seems odd, since I really am not interested in consuming any weed I have met up til now...Maybe I am just hanging out with the wrong crowd of weeds.) A nice rest and then a few more hours of mowing. ( I ruled that riding mower/atv/four-wheeler. Yeah, I am one tough lawn/jungle controller. You know it.) Meanwhile, boss-lady took care of pulling and burning those weeds (nee. trees.) that were so large my poor lawn tools were not up to the task. She also rebuilt the barn door and completely de-winter-coated the mamma dog that has been too busy to worry about those kinds of things. Yeah, you can be impressed. We are wild-west, rockin', ranchin', tough chicks. We got this.
Speaking of that, there was only one small screech when this lovely snake fellow turned up on the porch after supper. (The sound did not come from me. Sure served to get my blood pumpin' though.) Apparently he was not too pleased with the amount of unrest we had been creating on the property.
While alive, He looked like this...
And closer...And blurrier...
There may have been extreme zoom, long armed aiming and slight trepidation involved in the blurriness of these shots. I had not yet determined what kind, and hence, what level of danger was present...
Here he is... less cohesive...
Don't worry, I got it.
But good.
Here, I saved this for you...
(*Big evil grin*)
I am only very slightly hoping this creeps someone out.
Okay, maybe more than slightly. But to be kind, I will not describe the shovel technique, or the strong curl and strike he tried several times, or the decapitation itself, or even how cool it was when the body hit the hot ashes in the fire-pit causing... muscle freak out. (It's a technical term, okay?)
Just cause I am so very sensitive like that. Or something. Plus, the boss really isn't hot on the whole subject matter, so I might want to keep my own counsel.
Just imagine Saint George & the Dragon and you have the exact picture of me in this situation.
Yeah, I rocked today.
In case anyone was wondering, I think the consensus is leaning towards Mesa Verde Night Snake as the official calling card of the visitor. They are only very slightly toxic, so not as bad as finding a rattler or some such on the porch.
But I am open to other opinions...

Gazing Upon A Grazing Aberration...
One of those things you never think you will see? Three of these:
randomly grazing on the top of a mesa rise by the highway in-between Cuba, NM and Albuquerque, NM.
And yet...
I did.
Of course, no one saw them but I, probably due to the fact that I was so taken aback that I could not clearly enunciate what I wanted her to look for. I still think she is a bit unsure of my mental strength. However, in my defense, they were clearly outlined against the sky, kind of like this:
so the likelihood of my having been mistaken is actually really close to nil. There were three, one was larger and had much longer horns,with the very straight backward slight angle. The others were smaller, with thinner horns, more of a curve to them. I am assuming it was a male and two females, though I only saw them for about a minute.
It took a lot of research to make sure I was not losing what bit of control I have up there in my tiny brain, and yet, 'tis a fact. The African Oryx, or Gemsbok. They are really kind of neat looking, and I've been keeping an eye out every time we pass that area, but have yet to see any more. Or to get any pictorial proof.
But I will persevere!

For those who choose to believe I am clinically insane:

For those who choose to believe I am clinically insane:
- In 1969, the New Mexico State Department of Game and Fish decided to introduce gemsbok to the Tularosa Basin in the United States. The introduction was a compromise between those who wanted to preserve nature and those who wanted to use it for profit and promotion. Ninety-three were released from 1969 to 1977, with the current population estimated to be around 3,000 specimens. The reason they thrived is because their natural predators, including the lion, are not present.

- The Oryx - This African antelope was introduced to the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. The oryx was brought from the Kalahari Desert in Africa to an experimental range at Red Rock New Mexico. Federal law prohibits introducing a wild animal from another country into the wild in this country so offspring were obtained at this experimental range to introduce onto the White Sands Missile Range.

- Small populations of several oryx species, such as the Scimitar Oryx, exist in Texas and New Mexico (USA) in wild game ranches. Gemsboks were released at the White Sands Missile Range and have become an invasive species of concern at the adjacent White Sands National Monument.

"Those who don't try..."
The other day, we ran down to the dollar store to check for pup collars. As we got out of the car, there was a large explosion of change behind the car. Now, normally, I wouldn't take the time when we were in a rush, but one particular coin caught my eye. It had the look of a peso or some such. Since I collect coins, and the events of half magic jumping to the fore of my thoughts, I reached down and snatched it on my way past. I stuck it in my pocket, and went on my way. When I did think to pull it out and look at it, much to my surprise, it was...
A token for the "NYC transit authority". In the middle of Nowhere, NM. Random. (It looks a lot like the ones in "While You Were Sleeping", except that it is a bit larger.)
"Good for one fare". Yahoo, I am set up now. Just in case I ever need to get somewhere in NYC.

This is the next stage musical I want Hollywood to make into a movie...

Vaccinated Dreams
This past Saturday, I helped the Boss with vaccinations for the raging pack of pups. Such fun. And nice to do something in my future vocation, even if it was small. It has been way too long...

The used up ones...
The to be used ones...
The mess afterwards...
Actually got me believing that I could reach this lofty goal I have set for myself.

Super Hyper Movie Skills
I am currently watching this movie...
on Netflix. However, a ways into it, I realized I had forgotten to turn on the subtitles. (Yes, I watch movies with the subtitles on. No, I am not eighty, nor hard of hearing. Don't judge me.)
So, having turned them on, it took me a while of watching (while doing other things around the room) to realize I was actually reading something different than they were speaking. The dialog was actually from this movie...
Now, to clarify, and also to prove I am not abnormally dense, I do in fact often think through the other representations of a movie while watching one. So it wasn't unusual to be thinking the very words I was reading, while hearing what I was hearing. Of course, I know these two movies well enough to quote most of them start to finish. For anyone who doesn't, this could be very distracting. Especially for someone with actual hearing issues. Lol. I would say I can see it now, except that my eyes are still teary from laughing so hard about watching two movies at once. Finally, someone has come up with a way to keep up with me...
I guess the next step is to have one with sound, video, & subtitles all be different. That is the only way I can think of to do the "Shop Around The Corner/Good Ol' Summertime/You've Got Mail" series. I think I just developed a twitch, though.

Thunder Mountain
I love the sound of a storm at this altitude. When I was younger, I always assumed that the sound you hear in The Man From Snowy River was a poorly canned version of thunder claps. However, a bit back, when I first experienced inclimate weather up here, it was quite an eye opener. The sound echoing down the canyons is EXACTLY the same. The shivers run down my spine each and every time. I love it. And of course the look of the rain and clouds highlighting each previously unnoticed fold and dip is a thrill to my photofinger.

Participator Vs. Spectator
| Smoke-fed clouds blowing up over the mesa at sunset. |
I don't know how to tell you...
I don't know what to say...
I don't have the words...
I don't want to walk away...
Is it my job to say something?
Is it my place to say?
Should I initiate the topic?
Merely turn my head away?
Do you know the situation?
Do you care enough to try?
Do you notice any issues?
Do you see the times I cry?
I'll never have the voice,
I know I never will.
I'll never own the courage,
Or strength to climb that hill.
You choose inaction,
I choose security.
You shun the effort,
I shy from the sincerity.
I'll never have the words...
I'll never take that step.
I'll choose to walk away,
I'll live without that pep.
I don't know how to tell you...
