Today, after a long and involved discussion, my coworkers decided that the piece of "pork" to be found in a can of "pork & beans" was either a piece of whale blubber, or what remains after all usable material is extracted from crude oil. (I may or may not have contributed to this conference.)

The past week and a half Megan L. came to visit me. It was quite nice to have at least one of my friends closer than a thousand miles away, for awhile at least. This may be a problem for Oklahoma if every time I make a friend they move VERY far away. Activities happened, although not as many as would have been possible were I not required to be all adult and have a job or some such nonsense. And the lady was convinced to come again in the summer, so all in all a fairly successful venture. But now she is gone. (cue crowd *awww*)

Do not make the mistake of taking familiarity and proximity for license. Rudeness, even "in jest", is not acceptable when you daily portray the attitude of degradation. Even when used in jest, there MUST be a foundation of trust and Godly loving kindness, before someone may know you are not in seriousness. Snide hateful degrading derogatory judgmental bigoted self-centered complaining competitive...
These are not the attitudes God expects from us. Nor are they acceptable in His sight.

Now I am stuck posting something completely unrelated to anything anywhere close to what it was about....

Today, I called 911. All of my own will. And was summarily dismissed as being unnecessary and pointless. Sigh. Such is my daily luck. However unneeded it may have turned out, I am none the less convinced it was the only thing to do. To merely assume that someone else would or had called to report the fire would be as inexcusable as any complacency ever is.
Complacency as often kills as it harms in other ways. It is truly dangerous.
I refuse to take part in it.
So there it lies.

Just spent a good thirty minutes blogging and a phone call canceled out the entire block of typing. I am angry at the iPhone blogger app. And at the person who chose to call me at so Inopportune a time. *sigh* I am now crying silently to myself in the corner. I also no longer feel like blogging.

Today I found an app for blogger. Coolio. Maybe this will let me blog as often as the varied thoughts spinning around my brain beg me to. Slowly but surely making this new iPhone more in keeping with my tastes and personality. So here is my first blog from my new smart phone.
Just in case you were wondering, it has not yet made me feel more smartical. Maybe that takes a while...

This evening we were visited by the second earthquake in as many days.
Yesterday around 2 am and then another larger and more shallow one around the same time tonight. (for those who do not live in California, that means that it could be felt for a very long distance and shook for a good minute.) The final Usgs reading is 4.7 and then a 5.6. The record up until now was 5.5 in 1956. We are still feeling a few tiny aftershocks and the poor dogs are unsure how to protect the family from this unknown terror.

Named jointly for the characters from The Importance of being Earnest, and the mouse from Flowers for Algernon. The little fellow started out life as the next to smallest of the litter. Being an orange cat, he was already destined for imbecility, but the time it took for him to grace us with his presence caused even more brain trauma. A week into his life, it was fairly obvious that he was floundering. Currently, at just over two weeks, he is stable, but still tiny, maybe a third of the size of his brother and sisters.

On the plus side, the bottle feeding is having a nice side effect of making the dumb little thing incredibly affectionate. His little broken, scratchy purr comes out at the end of each feeding and he loves to curl up in my hand, (yepp, he fits in the one hand) and falls right to sleep.

You know, I was thinking lately; if you take equal measures of v and s and mix them up real good with a pinch of j in there, you'll just about come out with the exact product. Now how random and unlikely is that? Or mayhap not at all. When you have a winning example, then it would naturally precondition you to locate the same good results again. Just some simi-deep thoughts running through my mind like wild cowboys in front of a stampede.

Lately, I am getting reacquainted with Oklahoma, falling back in love with her in all her moods and seasons. Lots of pictures resulting from this of course, I am just too lazy to actually post all of them. I'd forgotten how much I am a part of this state, and it a vital part of my makeup. (Not makeup, but makeup. Red mud just doesn't flatter my complexion so much. Although, you'd think it would, what with the frequent, liberal applications all through my childhood. Hmm, that's another post altogether, isn't it?) I am somewhat ashamed to admit that for a while there, I almost got to that point in a long distance relationship where you begin to think maybe you could actually live without the other half of the relationship. Distance might make the heart grow fonder, but only for about a year, after that, senility creeps into the mix.

Spending lots of time at the lake with big scary guard dog. Of course anything involving water is readily and voluntarily participated in. (Except drowning. Never yet developed an affinity for that particular activity. I bet it would be great exercise, though I don't know what good it would do you once you were done drowning. I guess you'd be a healthy looking corpse...)

You know for some people, if someone labels them negatively, it makes them buck up, try to live it down, prove the invalidity of the claim, blah blah blah.

For others, if you slap a derogatory, derisive term on them, it merely makes them really want to live up to it. I mean, if someone has passed judgement, what would be the point of continuing to try or achieve anything, when the jury is back and the judges gavel has pounded in your skull? So why not go the other way, make them feel all righteous in their conclusions, give them something to crow about? Life is all about others right? Making their lives better by personal sacrifice. It is the very definition of a self-less lifestyle.

Right, so just call them a flawed saint. Oh, and leave them alone, Kay?

Nowhere else in this world would I, for the life of me, take someone flatly telling me to "Shut up!" when there was not a hint of joking involved. Yet here I calmly take it in silence at least once a week. Very often more often than that.

Why?

My conclusion is that I have either lost my backbone completely and no longer have a sense of self significance, Or I am a candidate for sainthood. Because trust me, some of these times it is a pure miracle that I keep my mouth shut and retreat behind my wall of self-protection, instead of going off.

I know I said I was gonna post my results of the 142pm, but the fact is that until today, they just haven't really been ones I want to share with the whole wide web. (I.E. pic of me or my dwelling etc.) But today I happened to be out and about at that time and this came across my path. and I want it a lot. If I can't get an original version, at least maybe I can't paint it to look like it. Sigh. I need to add some music right about here...

Right, so, I missed 142pm yesterday due to an acute case of studenteous unconsciousnesity. ( I was napping.) However, I jumped right back on the band wagon today. The only problem I am having is the severe lack of a life I have been experimenting lately. I am usually in the exact same place every afternoon: On campus, in my apt, sitting cross-legged on my bed, cramming homework into my overcrowded brain. So finding something unusual or new or picture worthy is somewhat challenging. Although, I guess that is kind of the point of the whole exercise.

This is what struck my fancy today. It is a horse figurine on my window sill. One of my favorite of all of the ones in my room. It always makes me smile.

Ok, So I was taking a bit of a walkabout the world wide web and ran across this site through someone by way of another place from here and there. *cough, cough* (Yes that's a shout-out. No, you don't need to know who to.)

The premise is this (quoted from the site)

This minute is the one minute of the day to do this.

Take the time to capture a moment of your life every day and share it.

The basic idea is how often do you stop to find something beautiful, interesting or amazing about the place you are in. This project is to remind you to take the time out of your life to try. Once a day. Every day. At exactly the same time. 1:42pm. When you find that something that strikes you, take a picture of it. I'm going to start trying. Should be an interesting exercise.

The footprints is mine for today. And me being me and 1:42 being a full minute long, I of course had more than one. More than a few, actually, but we'll just post the two.

I just created an incredible snack. Slightly odd, but awesome none the less.

I think the original idea came from craving burrito roll-ups. However, not having any tortillas, I improvised. Here's the recipe, such as it is...

Take one slice of real cheddar cheese

Spread it with cream cheese

Place on a thin slice of deli turkey

Lay a leaf of fresh lettuce on top

Cover with another slice of turkey

Tuck in the edges

Eat with fingers or wrap a paper towel around them

I'm completely addicted.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The ice storm bearing down on Oklahoma this week is just another in a growing list of major storms to hit the state over the last decade. One weather historian says the frequency of major ice storms has gone up dramatically over the last decade.

Since 2000, the state has experienced seven major ice storms with ice totals of more than an inch; that doesn't happen by accident.

Since the mid 80s, the state's winter temperatures have been much higher than the historical average.

"A warmer atmosphere means more water, so when it does rain there's more rain. That then causes damage in form of ice or snow," says Gary McManus.

The bad news is winter trends don't change overnight.

Gary doesn't expect the ice storms to stop any time soon.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- With the snow and ice headed our way, Oklahomans are pouring into local supermarkets and hardware stores to get supplies. Truckloads of generators are arriving at O'Connors Lawn and Garden Store in OKC.

Shaun O'Connor of O'Connors Lawn and Garden said, "A lot of people remember 2007 where we had a massive ice storm that shut down power for days, weeks. So, we have been going crazy."

Off the delivery trucks and into customers' truck beds, customers like Sandy Payne were anxious to get one. In Sandy's husband's case, it's a life or death situation without power.

Sandy Payne said, "He's on oxygen now. It runs on electricity and that's what keeps him breathing. Without power, he can't breathe."

O'Connors has sold about 200 generators in just the past two days.

Their last truckload will be in Thursday morning.

Through a Camera-lens darkly...

I wrote the below poem this Sunday, as I was coming out of church and on the trip back to campus.

The story behind it is as follows. Every time I neglect to take my camera with me, I inevitably regret it. It was a windy, rainy morning, with just the right amount of sun to make the water beautiful. Walking down the path to the parking lot, I glanced down and spotted three or so pine boughs, lying as though carefully placed, on the dark wet pavement. I reached for my camera bag only to realize I had figured that I'd not need it that day and left it back at my apartment. Just in that moment of disappointment and self-disgust, a line flitted through my mind;

(Everywhere I go, I see my life through a camera lense;

stills and pictures that might have been.)

Somewhat different from the finished product that I have here; it was in another meter that didn't fit as well with the rest of the poem as it begin to come to me. I twittered that thought and figured that was the end of it.

But then as I was driving back, I started thinking about the oddity that every time I leave without my camera, I see something that is remarkably picture worthy. And the different times that stood out to me started to arrange themselves into a metered rhyme.

Now, just a disclaimer: I am very much NOT a writer, and never poems. So the inherent problems therein I could not even tell you, much less correct.

I just liked the way it sounded and wanted to keep it for my own future reference.

So, here ya go. Please feel free to pick it to shreds. Or not. Not might be good. Yeah, I like not...

Every where I go,

my life through a camera lens;
momentary stills

Day 4 of my captivity. I am currently in the midst of bust out plan phi beta k. 57-9. The two small shields have just begun to succumb to the drops I put in their milk cups earlier. Further plans are almost ready to place in action. Back at the cell, things are beginning to look grim. With supplies trickling to a halt, had to survive today on only the meager portions of this...

Oddly enough, spent my evening with a six-foot-tall guy in pointy shoes that likes to eat syrup with spaghetti. (Buddy the elf, what's your favorite color?!?)

Day 3 of my captivity. Basic supplies beginning to run low. I'm afraid I'll have to go on strictest of rationing regimes. Just scraped the last of the hardened peanut butter from around the edges of the jar. Just enough sugar left for one more cup of hot tea. Found a stash of several jars of jelly, but plans for tea-sweetening created several small explosions. It's mere luck captors did not investigate the holes in the smaller room's floor . Plans in the make to endure chewing on tea bags. However, first implementing trials for sweetening with eggnog. Even if successful, only two cough drops left to dissolve in the mixture. Control of the coughing fits will then fall to the experimental method of swallowing teaspoons of vegetable oil to soothe the lacerations. The chill seeping into my holding facility is beginning to create severe signs of synovial chondromatosis. Begin today carving rudimentary crutches from headboard. No signs of either holders or other holdees, though sounds come through the ceiling and walls. Appears to be some kind of extreme, joint or large group, laughter-related interrogation technique. The incessant slamming of doors during normal sleeping hours I suspect to be a sleep-deprivation tactic. I refuse to let them win. I've begun depriving my own sleep instead to regain control. Primary mission still remains unfinished, although I continue to work on the plans and statistics remaining in my own consciousness. Supplementing those with any material I can find laying around the internet. I've also taken to singing loudly to myself to stave off the voices. Their whispering gets louder each day. They don't seem to have very valid ideas. Hence the current state of the east wall. I make another fling at freedom tomorrow night at 1840. Entirely different strategist this time. Details still highly classified, but I have strong hopes that using small children as a shield is one of the voices' best plans yet. Here's believing that next entry will be entered from somewhere out in the great wide world. Eyes are beginning to burn from scratching away in the poor light. Captive 1/03, over and out.

Concerns about Dangers from Swine Flu Vaccine Grow

(NaturalNews) Concerns about the safety of the H1N1 vaccine continue to grow as the government rushes to bring the vaccine to market. The FDA usually requires rigorous testing of any new drug, but concerns about the H1N1 pandemic has sped the vaccine through the channels without the same clinical testing as other vaccines. Even health care workers are concerned, as they are the first ones to receive the swine flu vaccine and will, in effect, be human guinea pigs.

A Health Workers March on Albany has been scheduled to protest the mandatory swine flu vaccination of nurses; it was reported in Newsday. Many face the loss of their jobs if they refuse the vaccination.

Mercury poisoning is one of the concerns about any vaccination, but in recent years the additive, thimerosal, which contains mercury, has been removed from most vaccines. However, the H1N1 flu shot still contains a high level of mercury and this alone is a concern for children, pregnant women, and the elderly -- the very populations who are being encouraged to take the swine flu shot.

Squalene is another additive used in vaccines that is a concern. Squalene was an additive in the vaccine given to Gulf War soldiers and is now known to be one of the causes of Gulf War Syndrome. Even the government, who approved the use of squalene in the vaccines, has admitted that it was one of the causes of the vets' illness.

Side-effects from the H1N1 flu shot are another concern. The vaccine for the Avian flu caused a rare neurological disorder, Guillain-Barre syndrome and death.

One third of health care professionals are refusing to take the H1N1 vaccine, according to polls in both the US and England. Another third is unsure, leaving only one third of the health care professionals supporting the H1N1 vaccine. President Obama has stated that the H1N1 vaccine will be voluntary, but companies and hospitals are acting otherwise, and against the interests of their employees and medical staff.

Both Ireland and Greece have said that they will fine and imprison those who refuse to be vaccinated.

A recent article in Reuters reported that "adverse event reports" are expected by the public health departments after the swine flu vaccine is administered, including one million heart attacks, 700,000 strokes and 900,000 miscarriages.

The FDA is charged with protecting the American people from unsafe drugs. Their intention to speed the swine flu vaccine into production has caused concern about the safety of the new drug. Until these questions are addressed, the health benefits of the swine flu vaccine remain under suspicion.

In a study published in the September 25th issue of the American Chemical Society's (ACS) Journal of Natural Product, scientists Fang-Rong Chang and Yang-Chang Wu reveal that in lab experiments Ferula assa-foetida exhibits a remarkable ability to kill the H1N1 swine flu virus.

In their study, Chang and Wu identified a group of chemical compounds in extracts of the plant that turned out to be far more potent against influenza A (H1N1) than a prescription antiviral drug available for the flu. "A standardized plant extract of F. assa-foetida, a species that has been used to treat influenza for many years, may also be worthy of being further investigated as a new phytomedicine," the authors write.

The scientists also noted that the roots of F. assa-foetida have been used for centuries in folk medicine as a natural anti-cancer treatment, antibiotic, diuretic, antispasmodic treatment and more. The plant, which grows mainly in Iran, Afghanistan and mainland China, reportedly tastes much like onions when it is cooked. When raw, the sap of the Ferula assa-foetida has such a bad smell that sometimes it is called the "Dung of the Devil" plant.

I am not planning on getting the flu shot in the near or distant future. I am not planning on going on a preventive antibiotic. And, I am certainly not planning on either, one: stopping current very necessary prescriptions to insure no drug interactions while on said antibiotic, nor am I, Two: planning on travelling fourteen hours to my doctor every three days to monitor for drug interaction. I am not planning on changing any of my other current medical precautions that I always take while I am in this hotbed of hypochondria and bacterium. Even without the hype that is out and about now, I am on a way more exhaustive regime of preventive diet, vitamins and minerals than most people even remember anymore, if they ever knew existed in the first place.

Besides, I figure dying is easier, faster, less trouble and way more fun.

It was just a fairly good video of this song that had well done lyrics on it. So, for all you people that might have been wondering, No, I do not have a fansite for this fella...

I have exactly ZERO pictures from homecoming. I was working at the Ministerial Pie table instead of snapping shots.

But, I learned a few very important things:

Apparently ministers, college guys and men in general have no ability to handle a pie server without disaster occurring soon afterwards. (We only tried it a few times. That stopped fairly quick.)
I learned that if I ever wanted to make a few bucks, all I'd have to do is put up an ad in the guys dorm selling my pecan pie by the piece. (They'd have eaten it all if the actual customers hadn't started coming...)
I now know that dollar general will accept a return on a hundred and thirty foam cups, and Walmart (may it be blessed for it) takes unneeded pie pumpkins back. (Always make sure they are just the cheap gourds if you are gonna carve 'em. For five bucks each, and only because they were edible, we didn't carve and use the things. *Shudder)
Marshmallows, oddly enough, are the pie topping and garnish of choice for some people. (I still say they made it up out of their own oddness and unnatural affinity for marshmallows.)
Tattoos are completely acceptable. :) (As long as they are the GBS logo.)
That one fella should have gotten out his unicycle, cause we were nearing carnival stage and that would have topped it off nicely. That and someone on stilts... (There's always next year!)
We need bigger signs for the hot cocoa. That was some really good Cocoa.
Someone might have paid someone to dunk someone else in the dunk tank... (That's all I'm sayin.)

Bees get somewhat sluggish and then giddy when allowed too much pie. And pie still sells with free bees added to the plate.
There are a lot of bee murderers in this world. (I like bees. I thought about taking up banners and starting a picket or Crusade for the Bees or something...) Be very careful the next time you think about dressing your child as an adorable little honey bee...

It was a crazy busy weekend, but I had fun. I need a laptop (Ooh, I have a whole post coming up on RockyTop...) so I can jot down more of the fun stuff I learn. I forget way too much and I am not sitting here any longer while things come back to me.

Living in limbo

Someone mentioned it is pet peeve week or month or something. It isn't really that big a deal to me, but it can get a bit nagging. I'd like to have everything compartmentalized. I think that is why I'd rather live out of a few suitcases than a jumbled unknown. Just give me my boxes and I'll be just fine. I like my boxes, my compartments, my own systems. I know where each and everything is and it has a place and is in it's place...

You'll never be like me, don't try to make me be like you. I think we are great the way we are.

The Beauty of the Skies... ARR!

Nothing makes me feel quiet and content quite the same as looking at a sky that is deep and blue. I can just feel God's creative juices flowing trough it.

Bolly-Vall. I was going to discourse on the game. I even had it half written in my head all poised to come pouring out. But, I decided I'd better not unless I was prepared to try to better understand the subtleties of the game first and give it a fair chance. I don't think I am prepared. So, I'll keep my snide, and I might add hilarious, remarks to myself. For now...

A random shot of trees? I know. But I had been sitting there doing my homework (not very deep thinking stuff) and watching a group of students play V-ball. All the sudden I realized that when I glanced up to reexamine something in my mind that I'd just read, I was looking at this. It struck me that it was the same thing that was happening just below. Two very different species, jostling for water and nutrients, space and individuality, yet learning to co-mingle and co-inhabit the same space and time in our world. These people come not only from every part of America and every cultural setting, but also from separate age and maturity levels. Yet by running around and working together and being crazy, they were endeavouring to build a bond that will last far beyond their graduation and into the years of separation. Just as these trees must have roots that are twined together in a irreversible mesh, making them more resilient to storms and

drought, so also these kids will have a stronger and more successful life and ministry because they have used these years to build a Godly support system. Anyways, yeah, a random shot of trees...

I'm amazed that God can make anything gorgeous. Even an overpass. I know, I know, family dear, it's another picture of clouds. Might as well roll out the comments, cause I know they are coming... *sigh* But they are pretty clouds. I like clouds. *Sigh*

The sunsets the last few days have made me think of Oklahoma sunsets. The other evening was phenomenal colors and lines, but of course I was camera defunct on that occasion. How that always happens to me, I'll never know. This one was pretty rocking awesome itself.

It really made for some cool lighting on the V-ball court. I probably took more picture than I should have, since I was supposed to be homeworking, but alas... Such err my trouble be...

Rama joined me today in chapel. I was so very glad. (*She said with a total lack of emotion in her voice.*) I am hoping the reprobate will get a little religion in his life. (That or find someone he likes better than me and do the whole desertion tactic...) I know he can see what goes on but I hope he can hear as well. That message was quite good, what parts I was allowed to absorb.

My choice for the second project in Adolescent Literature class is a book recommended to me by someone who's humor closely matches my own (e.g. shockingly odd and bitingly dry). So I really think I am going to enjoy it far more than the previous experience.

Please, don't ask.

And I would tell you to go read the book so you can decide for yourself, but I really don't want the kind of people who would be reading that type of stuff searching and bring up my website. (*Shudder*) If I get enough protestations (from my mother... "Hi mom") I might go ahead and just blog my review paper. But otherwise, I'll just slam that door closed with a relieved sigh...

I made a my weekly-but-sometimes-twice-or-three-times-a-week trip to the library yesterday. Since my school related reading is fairly heavy this semester, I just browsed and then decided to try to figure out the music section of the library. They have it set up oddly. While some is sorted into genre, others are lumped into the popular music section. I messed around till I was comfortable with finding an artist (I chose Jim Brickman. I've been hankering for some good "study to" piano music.) in the computer and then finding all of his albums, which were scattered at seemingly random throughout the section. However, if you are not looking for anything in particular, the system does not lend itself to browsing. When you begin flipping through the shelf, you will find things like Ronen Tynan, Prince, Barbara Mandrel, Dean Martin, The Four Tops and newer artists from every genre that I couldn't hope to recognize much less remember the names of. Here a Concerto, there a rap CD, now a nice moldy oldie then a whining rocking Disney star. My mind not only gets irritated with trying to find what I came for, it just get plain out and out tired from trying to wrap my head around the sheer variety that arises. I can't stand it for long before my eyelid begins to twitch, my arm makes sudden and jerking motions and I have to dart to the classic literature section nearby to keep from finding the nearest person that look in any way disorganized and flailing wildly at them. (This is the downtown Cinci library. There are lots of people that look like that. Just to clarify why this might be a danger.) The Dewey Decimal never looked so good. I've taken to shelf reading to keep myself sane.

I found the ones I looked up in the computer, but as to browsing, I am avowed never again to try. My favorite library tactic and I am barred from it. Sad.

But I did find Chess in Concert, so the world is currently looking vaguely rosy around the edges...

My theory is that anything that causes both somnia and insomnia needs to sit itself down and have a little talking to. And increased risk of hypothermia and the inability to sweat causing a risk of dangerous heat stroke? To quote Meg; "At the same time?!?" I'm just saying, the baby alien they have injected me with needs to decide how exactly it is gonna kill me, because the whole "increased risk of severe clumsiness" is not the way to reach maturity if I'm gonna be the host. Not on a campus full of stairs...

Besides, what's next? Anorexia AND Rexia?! (I don't think that's a thing. But I'm makin a point here...)

And the eyelid twitching? I think He's taking control of my eyes so he can watch what's goin' on. He'll have a really good education on the Bible and Literature by the end of me.

I should name him. How rude is it to continue callin him "it" and "he" all the time. I'll get back to you on that. Maybe... Nope, He just told me his name is Rama and if I don't use that he'll disintegrate my spleen. I like my spleen...

(I wonder if it's cause my eyelid was twitching while I was reading the Rama book the other night? The little snoop. Unimaginative, too.)

So anyway, Rama And I eventually did sleep at around six or so. The question is, was it sleeping or napping. Ha ha, gotcha there.

But, How does he get all the way down to my feet to poke them with his claws that way? Ugh-ness.

Each drop is necessary for the survival of the plant life, yet each is fleeting and unique in it's time on the surface. We can't see what changes will be made once those drops reach their final goal and purpose. We can't know the impact we could have by a mere brush of a sleeve passing or a breath of air over top, dislodging the intended perch of the life-giving moisture. Changing the path the water is travelling down in it's never ending circle to refresh and renew the land. Perhaps we have doomed a leaf to dry out and wither. Perchance our hapless and careless passing was the death knoll sounded for some flora we've never given a second thought to. Maybe.

Or, maybe, the omnipotent and supernal God of the creation has every passing timed to the last breath of stirred air currents. Our God of multiple galaxies has the ability to put you in the right place and the turning point of time to be used in such a way as you've never imagined being used in your life. Our God is The Master Gardener. The Master Planner. The Organized Mastermind of every thing living and not.

The next time you aren't sure why you are in a certain place at a certain time, maybe Someone else knows where you need to be and is helping guide you to a plant, or animal, or lost freshman, that just needs a little push in the right direction...

We've all met them: that person that has a "one up" personality;

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED IN MY SUMMER. THIS IS MY FAVORITE BOOK. THAT HAPPENED TO ME TOO BUT I ALSO HAD TO CHEW OFF MY LEG AT THE KNEE.

Only slightly less peevishly annoying is the "I'll share and I'll share alike" crowd. These are prevalent, and often masquerade as normal people. They really want to talk, they ooze care and comradeship. But they want one word answers that agree with, support or in some way make their statement better. They get you in a corner and start:

Them: Wow, it's been really hot today!

You: Yeah, I heard it was supposed to get to 80.

Them: *Stare at you blankly like you are speaking Arabic.* So, this is really a nice place for a party.

You: Yeah, I like it. I heard they were going to hold it somewhere else but moved here.

Them: *Glance at you out of the corner of their eyes, like they can't figure out what disease you have* huh. Have you seen Mr. Frenchly lately? I heard he is moving to Scotland and taking up piping on all the cliffs of Dover!

You: Umm...No, but I don't think the White Cliffs of Dover are in Scotland...

Them: *Condescension oozing* Yes they are dear. Don't you remember that song? "Bluebirds over..."?

You: Um...Yea, but that doesn't prove they are in Scotland.

Them: *With infinite patience for the child of ignorance* OK, remember the song, what does the rest of it say? Let's remember OK? "There will be bluebirds over the white cliffs of Dover, tomorrow when the world is free." Right? OK. So what is the one thing everyone thinks of besides the cliffs when anyone thinks of Scotland? The Scotlishman, of course. OK, and if you think of a Scot what do you think of besides the kilt?

You: A bagpipe?

Them: *Eyes rolling* Try to keep up here. Scotland doesn't even have tobacco. No, a fight. A Scot is always fighting. So if the world needs to be free tomorrow... are you with me here? Where else would the song be set, Dear? Scotland where they are always at war! So the Cliffs of Dover are in Scotland! Are you going to be able to remember now that I explained it out?

You: *Flabbergasted by the tenure of this stupidity* Whatever.

Them: *In fine form now that they have saved the world from another uneducated person* So What do you think about that new play?

You: I haven't seen it yet.

Them: *Thrilled to their shoe buttons* Oh, it was lovely! I simply cried and cried. When the heroin dies I always think it is just like a oldtimey play! And the way she did. Just falling across Romeo thinking he was dead when he wasn't really! OH! It was So pitiful!

You: *Some of the patter sinking in* Wait what is the name of this play?

Them: *Annoyed at being interrupted with more that two syllables* Romeo and Juliet. It's by this new author named Shakespeare. Just the one word, like Madonna. Isn't that a scream? He is very mysterious, I haven't seen him around at all. I am determined to be the first though...

You: Umm...I don't think you are going to be able to. He died in the early 1600's. It's an old play they are reviving and just doing it...really well.

Them: *with the attitude clearly written in their eyes that they think you are nuts and are humoring you to get you to stop talking instead of listening.* I see. Yes, well, That's nice for him isn't it? So, That Frenchly sure beats all doesn't he? Who'd have thought he would just go off his rocker like that? Is he here, do you know? I want to see for myself...

You: I haven't seen him for a while. He is moving to Scotland but that's just a rumor about the piping and cliffs.

Them: *Frankly hostile* What? How do you know?

You: Oh, I know Mr. Frenchly.

Them: *Dismissively* Oh, well, I know all of his friends so I got it from a REALLY close source. Did you know he is completely nuts and gonna go with the whole kilt thing!?

You: Trust me, he isn't, and isn't.

Them: *Back to hostility, but the kind that belittles the receiver into a uneducated blob* You wouldn't know. Mr. Frenchly's mechanic told his girlfriend who told my boyfriend's manicurist! So you see, I HAVE IT FROM THE MAN HIMSELF!

You: *Finally fed up and leaving* Oh I see. Well, I apologize, since things must have changed since I last saw him at four, when we got married before we fly to Scotland where we both have new positions at The University of Edinburgh. Please, excuse my ignorance...and me, I have to be going now.

Them: *Turning to a new victim* Hi, nice party isn't it? Little warm. Lovely food, too. Have you heard about those Frenchlys? I heard they are moving to Scotland to work on the Icebergs....

God's Rules Don't Change. He doesn't change His mind.

I am certainly NOT saying that our rules are on the same plane with God's. But if we are to deport ourselves after him and strive to bring younglings in his ways, we must, as a necessity pattern our rule book, and revisions thereof, after HIS. (That's a long sentence. Sorry.)

We see the kids in our church today and we assume they are already set in their assumptions and assimilations where the unchanging character of God is concerned. But the truth of the matter is, although we like to joke about "Kids these days.." and "These young things..." the eighteen and nineteen year-olds who walk onto this campus or walk into a church are just as observant and absorbent as they ever were in "my day." Maybe more so, because the world is sucking the spirituality out of us so fast that they are hungering in spirit whether they are aware of it or not. Why else would they be here...

These kids are smarter than I was at that age. It's a sad, lonely street smart, but it has a strong tough logic behind it. A logic that will pull you apart and spit you out if you are spouting platitudes and living in despair. A logic that will see the dress code from one year change to the next and run in a vein very similar to this: God's School-God's Rules-God's Character, God's school changes the rules that are laid as God's rules, God must not be unchanging.

Let me just clarify something here before I step into a pool of never ending sinking sand, since I don't know who might be reading this... I AGREE WITH 90% OF THE DRESS CODE. And the rest are a very good idea for damage control and maintaining a level of classiness at this school.

With that disclaimer out of the way, I still say that is all these kids are getting from this code. The ones that do not hold to it when they come, do not maintain it when they leave, nor do they follow it while they are here. There are always lines crossed and students sent to change. More than half of the dean's time is spent policing the dress code. Again, I like the code. I DO NOT want to walk out of my room and be, well, any more shocked than I already am sometimes. I hold to MODESTY. And yes that is covered and taught to these kids. But unless you are in the ministerial division, it is in ONE class. Your freshman year.

Ah...Freshman year.

I was...(ahem)...VERY well accustomed to this school and every practice and place and person thereof my freshman year and I still remember about HALF of the stuff covered in my classes that semester. And that is also with out all of the other stuff these kids have to deal with. "Where am I gonna live, Who am I gonna date, Who is gonna be my best friends, What about my books, food, Etc?"

So these kids walk home from their first semester (actually they probably drive.) and their Mom says "So what have you learned?" and all they can say is "Stuff, what's for dinner?"

These kids need to know modesty. They need it knocked in one ear and someone please plug the other. They need it every day, day in and day out. If these kids never leave here knowing how to carry a note or a one; we should send them out of here knowing how to carry themselves with decorum and decency. God didn't give us the big rules and the little ones. This is serious stuff we are not even bothering to mention to our kids. Make it part of our daily rites in the dorm. Put it in every sermon in Sunday school. Tell the kids that it's not about the heel of your shoe being in or out, but about the view you are presenting to the world. Let them know that the reason we wear our hair up is not biblical, but due to raising the class and businesslike atmosphere. Are we afraid to tell them the truth? Because I am pretty sure they are not afraid to know the truth. About a lot more than even I do. These kids are harder and less naive than anything we have ever encountered before.

All, I am actually ranting about here is that we should not just bring these kid here and say "Here, these are the rules, you have to follow them, because they are the rules."

I know that in the discipline of a child, if you answer when your child asks you "why" he should follow your command, you are doing that child a disservice. But in the raising of the Christians of our future, if we don't answer this "Why?" with what the Bible actually has to say, and not just in bible class or in chapel or church, but every time we walk or talk, we are not only doing them a disservice, we are killing our future.
